The Crvena Zvezda basketball club will ask the management of the ABA league to resolve the situation regarding the number of clubs from one country that can perform in the first tier of the regional competition from the next season 2022/2023 and the immediate cancellation of the upcoming playoff matches between the two Serbian clubs Borca and Zlatibor.
According to the rules of the regional competition, no more than five clubs from the same country can play in the ABA league, which is why the two Serbian clubs Borac from Čačak and Zlatibor will have to play a playoff.
Zlatibor won the ABA 2 league, and Borac was the weakest Serbian team this season in the ABA league, but not the weakest team overall.
Zvezda believes that the duel is "completely unnecessary and unjustified" and that the league must react urgently and cancel those matches.
"The number of clubs is defined by the social contract and the propositions of the competition, but for this (current) season 2021-2022. That is why we publicly ask the question, why two Serbian clubs, one of which (Borac) is not second to last in the table of the first regional league and the other (Zlatibor) ) who won the second regional league, they have to play when the proposals for the competition for the next season have not yet been made," stated Zvezda in a statement.
The Belgrade club recalled that during this season's club meetings and League Assembly sessions, it was concluded that it is necessary to change the social contract and that in the working version there are two proposals related to the topic of the number of clubs from one country - "or there will be no limit and 'national key' or the maximum number of clubs in the league of 14 will be six from one country".
Zvezda stated that this change is inevitable and that it will happen during the summer - either a regional league with 14 clubs with a maximum of six clubs from one country or more, there will be no restriction or national key".
"We believe that it is up to the leadership of the regional league to react urgently by April 30 and set guidelines for the continuation of the barrage, because we are in real danger of having an irregular competition season 30.04.2022-2022 already on April 2023, XNUMX," the announcement reads.
Zvezda stated that it is not a matter for the club itself, but also for the league management and the co-owner clubs of the league and that it has a responsibility to point out irregularities, especially those that affect the regularity of the competition.
The press release states that Zvezda has proposed on several occasions to abolish the limit on the maximum number of clubs from one country and that those clubs that win a place in the ABA league due to sports results should also be participants in that league.
