Golden State Warriors basketball player Draymond Green publicly apologized Saturday and announced he will retire from the team for a few days after punching teammate Jordan Poole.
"One, I made a mistake," said Green, who emphasized that he apologized to Poole and his family.
"Immense shame comes with this gesture," Green said.
"Not just for myself, because I was the one who committed the action ... but the shame that Jordan has to deal with and that this team has to deal with, this organization has to deal with. But also Jordan's family. His family saw the video. His mother, his father saw that video. If my mother saw that video, I know how she would feel."
Green first apologized to Poole and the team on Thursday before practice, then immediately left the gym and went home. General manager Bob Myers said he doesn't expect Green to miss the start of the season, and coach Steve Kerr said Green will return to the team. But a leaked video of the incident in between forced Green to take different steps.
The Warriors plan to take "all possible legal action" to find whoever shared the video, which shows Green brutally punching Poole in the head.
Myers said the altercation stemmed from routine conversations and had nothing to do with upcoming contract negotiations for Green and Poole.
