On June 23, 2022, the famous basketball player Vlade Divac addressed the office of the Prime Minister with a request for admission to Montenegrin citizenship in accordance with Article 12 of the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship.
As it was explained to "Vijesta", from the office of Prime Minister Dritan Abazović, in his address, Divac stated that he is connected to the state of Montenegro in many ways.
"Namely, his wife is a Montenegrin citizen and they own a business that operates in this country. Also, Divac stated that he is the owner of real estate in Montenegro and spends most of his vacation with his family on the Montenegrin coast," the Prime Minister's office announced, clarifying on what legal basis did Divac get Montenegrin citizenship.
In accordance with Article 12 of the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship, it is defined that a person whose admission to Montenegrin citizenship is of particular importance for the state, scientific, economic, cultural, economic, sports and other interests of Montenegro may, exceptionally, acquire Montenegrin citizenship by admission on the basis of a proposal The President of Montenegro, the President of the Parliament of Montenegro or the President of the Government of Montenegro.
"In this regard, the Cabinet of the Prime Minister turned to the Ministry of Sports on June 24, 2022, with a request to provide an opinion regarding Divac's request. The Ministry of Sports and Youth submitted a positive opinion on the same day, June 24, 2022 opinion, stating, among other things, that he is a professional basketball player whose performance was a major contribution to achieving top results of the basketball national team of Yugoslavia. Bearing in mind Article 12 paragraph 2 of the Law on Montenegrin Citizenship, then the applicant's request, as well as the positive opinion of the Ministry of Sports and Youth, the Prime Minister has submitted to the Ministry of Internal Affairs a proposal to admit Mr. Vlade Divac to Montenegrin citizenship," the Prime Minister's Office told "Vijesti".
Abazović handed over the Montenegrin passport to Divac today.
