The rise of women's basketball in Belgium began in 2017 when this team won a historic bronze medal at the European Championship in the Czech Republic. A year later, at the Mundobasket in Spain, Belgium took fourth place, while in 2021, another bronze medal was won at the continental championship.
After that, Belgium participated in the Olympic Games for the first time in history and won seventh place in Tokyo, and then took fifth place at the Mundobasket in Australia last year.
And the crown for the great years and development of women's basketball arrived tonight in "Stožice" - Belgium defeated Spain 64:58 in the final of the European Championship and won the gold medal for the first time in history.
Spain led from the beginning of the match and controlled the result, but the advantage was never in double digits. And then, four minutes and 15 seconds before the end of the game, the great Emma Messeman hit a three-pointer and Belgium took the lead for the first time (55:54).
In the next attack, Alba Torres was accurate for two points (56:55) and that was the last lead of the "fury" in the game. What followed was a 7:0 run by the Belgians, a 62:55 lead and the historic success of this national team.
In the selection of Belgium, only four basketball players scored points, and the best was Emma Messeman, who finished the match with 24 points and eight rebounds. In the quarterfinals against Serbia, Meseman became the first female basketball player to record a triple-double at the European championships.
Chiara Linskens finished the match with 18 points, Julie Vanlo with 13 points. Julie Alleman scored nine points.
With Spain, Keralt Casas was the most effective with 14 points.
