Svetislav Pešić's boys still managed to "break" a nice rival who mainly relied on hitting threes, later to win the Mundobasket, and the performance from Indianapolis is still New Zealand's greatest achievement today.
The guy who tormented the Yugoslavs under the basket was Pero Kameron - the man who now leads this basketball team from the bench.
Pero is a legend of basketball in this distant country, and his son Flynn Cameron will be one of New Zealand's trump cards. However, the first stars on the court come from the German Bundesliga - Alba's center Jani Vecel from Berlin and Finn Delaney, the wing center of Telekom Bona.
What adorned this selection at the previous Mundobasket was a great offensive game (in China they scored 99,4 points per game), and similar basketball (run and shoot) is expected this summer.
Will that and the famous warrior dance "haka" that the New Zealanders perform before the match be enough to pass the group in which the powerful United States of America and Greece? Only on the condition that the defense is a shade better.
