At the Mundobasket in China in 2019, the German basketball team did not advance to the second stage, and in the end it only took 18th place.
Four years have passed since then, and Germany has been much more successful after its disastrous performance in China. The team reached the quarter-finals at the 2021 Olympic Games, and then won the bronze medal at the Eurobasket on home soil, and for the first time achieved honors at the continental championships after silver in Belgrade in 2005.
This year's Mundobasket is a chance for a new good ranking and the continuation of good games, which started in Tokyo two years ago. In the first stage, the Germans, as expected, defeated Finland and Japan, in the derby they were better than Australia, so they carried over all three victories to the second stage and took a huge step towards the quarter-finals.
"At the Eurobasket last year, we won the bronze medal. We are looking forward to this challenge. We are trying to do our best and write new pages of history," said German representative Denis Schroeder.
Germany won its only medal at the world championships in 2002 in Indianapolis, when it defeated New Zealand in the match for third place on the wings of Dirk Nowicki. After that, the best result was eighth place in Japan in 2006. Is it time for another medal at the world shows?
"We expected to have a better result than four years ago in China. It's nice to see that we recorded all the victories in the group. But we are only at the beginning of the journey. We have high expectations," said coach Gordon Herbert.
The first star of the team, Schroeder, averages 19,7 points at Mundobasket.
"As a team, we know what we can do and what we can't do. When we do our best, then in every match we have a chance. And we look forward to that," said the Toronto basketball player.
