The owners of the NBA champion Boston Celtics have put the basketball club up for sale.
The group Boston Boston Basketball Partners LLC announced that it intends to sell a majority stake this year or early next, and that it will sell the rest of its shares in 2028.
Vic Grousbeck, whose family leads the ownership group, is expected to remain at the helm of the club until the sale is completed.
Boston won its 18th championship last month, beating Dallas 4:1 in the final.
The current owners bought Boston in 2002 from the Gaston family for $360 million.
Last year, Forbes valued the Boston Celtics at $4,7 billion, ahead of only Golden State with $7,7 billion, New York with $6,6 billion and the Los Angeles Lakers with $6,4 billion.
In an email to club employees, Vic Grousbeck wrote that the owners are "committed to finding a worthy new ownership group to lead the Celtics to decades of success."
Last year, the Phoenix Suns were sold for four billion dollars, and then the Milwaukee Bucks were sold for $3,5 billion.
