The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced today the names of the eight candidate countries for hosting the European Championship in 2029.
The candidates are Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Spain, and at the end of the process, four of the eight countries will be co-organizers of the continental competition.
"The fact that we have received eight official bids to host Eurobasket in 2029 is a confirmation of the great reach of this European competition. Our national associations have embraced the now well-established multi-home format not only as a driver for the competition's huge growth, but also as a driver for the development of our sport on all corners of the continent," said FIBA Europe Executive Director Kamil Novak.
Of all the candidates, only Estonia and the Netherlands have never hosted a European Championship, while Finland is trying to become the first consecutive host, as the Scandinavian country will host Europe's best basketball players in September 2025, along with Cyprus, Poland and Latvia.
The candidates include five former European champions, namely Germany, Greece, Lithuania, Slovenia and Spain.
The final decision on the hosts of the 2029 European Championship will be known in May next year.
