The Montenegrin women's basketball team will play in Group C at the upcoming European Championship with the teams of Belgium, the Czech Republic and Portugal, as decided by tonight's draw in Greece.
Montenegro will play in EuroBasket for the eighth time in a row, and it earned a place in the continental competition in a qualifying group that also included Luxembourg, Switzerland, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Montenegro will play their group stage matches in Brno, as the Czech Republic is one of four countries hosting the upcoming continental tournament. In addition to the Czech Republic, the championship will be held in Greece, Italy and Germany.
"I think we have a pretty good group. A tough group, of course, but at the same time a good one for us. However, it all depends on us, namely the composition we will have at the European Championship, because that will greatly influence what our wishes will be. There is still a long way to go before the championship, there is certainly a possibility that something will change in the rosters of other national teams, but overall a good group for us," said coach Jelena Škerović for the Federation's website.
Jelena Škerović's team will play their first match on June 19th against the hosts, the Czech Republic. A day later, they will face the current European champions, Belgium, while the match against Portugal is scheduled for June 22nd.
"We have Belgium, who are the European champions and of course the favorites for first place. We are in a group with the Czech Republic, as one of the hosts of the championship, which will certainly strive to achieve the best possible result. The fact is that they have had good quality in the team, especially in the last three years. There is also Portugal, who, after winning against Serbia, qualified for the European Championship for the first time, but they are certainly an unpleasant team," added Škerović.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. If Montenegro advances, they will face a team from Group D.
"We have time to get to know everyone better. It won't be easy, but it's clear that Belgium will be in the lead, and we have a battle with the Czech Republic and Portugal for qualification," said the coach.
Eurobasket is scheduled from June 18th to 29th.
GROUP A: Greece, Turkey, France and Switzerland.
GROUP B: Slovenia, Serbia, Italy and Lithuania.
GROUP C: Belgium, Czech Republic, Montenegro and Portugal.
GROUP D: Great Britain, Germany, Sweden and Spain.
