The AdmiralBet ABA League assembly session was held, after which it should become clearer what this competition will look like next season.
Two decisions are very important for Montenegrin basketball - SC Derbi has become one of the 12 members of the ownership structure, while Mornar should remain part of the elite next season if the league expands from 16 to "a maximum of 20 clubs."
In addition to "Students", the ownership structure also includes Budućnost Voli, Crvena zvezda, Partizan, Cedevita Olimpija, Cibona, FMP, Igokea, Krka, Mega, Mornar and Zadar.
Barani are last in the table, their chances of avoiding relegation are minimal, but now the situation is changing and Mihailo Pavićević's team could be a member of the elite rank in the 2025/26 season. All that is needed is for the league to expand.
"The ABA League Assembly has decided that, starting from the 2025/26 season, the ABA League can consist of a maximum of 20 clubs. At the same time, the Assembly has determined that next season the maximum number of clubs from one country will be limited to 50 percent of the total number of participating teams," the ABA League website states.
Serbian basketball has six representatives this season (Crvena zvezda, Partizan, Spartak, Mega, FMP and Borac), Montenegro has three - Budućnost Voli, SC Derbi and Mornar, as well as Croatia, represented by Zadar, Split and Cibona.
There are also Cedevita Olimpija, Krka (Slovenia), Igokea (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and Dubai, which joined the ABA League this summer.
"The ABA League Assembly has decided to form a working group that will, as soon as possible, define the criteria by which wild cards will be awarded, along with the development of possible models of the competition system," the ABA League announced.
In recent weeks, there has been speculation that Abu Dhabi, Cluj, MZT from Skopje and Vienna could play in the ABA next season.
