Istanbul gained Bahçeşehir in 2018 - another basketball club for this great city. The very next year, the club entered the Turkish Super League and wanted to immediately prove itself in a league home to giants such as Anadolu Efes and Fenerbahçe.
However, not everything went as expected in the "Sinan Erdem Dom", the quarterfinals of the domestic playoffs were an obstacle that was impossible to overcome, and in Europe there were certain successes, but in weaker FIBA competitions.
And then everything changed when Montenegrin coach Dejan Radonjić took over the club, and our center Marko Simonović joined the team.
This season, Bahçeşehir first made history in the Eurocup, where they reached the semifinals for the first time, and then the team from Turkey's largest city finally broke the curse of the quarterfinals on home soil.
Bahçeşehir is in the semifinals of the Turkish playoffs for the first time, after winning three matches against Tofas. Radonjić and Simonović achieved the key triumph in the quarterfinals on the away field in Bursa, after drama in the final and after five minutes of extra time (96:92).
Simonović finished the match with eight points and two rebounds, the best of his teammates were Tyer Cavanaugh (23 points, eight rebounds) and Kenan Sipahi (20), while Tofaş was not helped by another great performance by MVP Marquis Reed, who scored 34 points.
"I'm proud of my players. When we look at all three games, we had our good moments in each one. This was a very difficult series for us - we made mistakes on both sides of the field, but in the last attack of the regular period we managed to win overtime and in the end we won," Radonjić told the club's website.
He says about the entire season...
"We are currently experiencing all of this as a great success and we will celebrate it. We have already played in one semi-final this season and this really means a lot to us. I am very happy and proud of everything we have done this season," emphasized the former coach of Buducnost and the national team of Montenegro.
And, in the semi-finals, Bahçeşehir will have a "treat" and a clash with the new European champion - the powerful Fenerbahçe.
In the second semi-final, Efes and Besiktas will meet, whose colors are defended by Kyle Olman, the new Montenegrin national team player.
