Nikola Jokić has decided to postpone negotiations on a contract extension with Denver from this summer to next, the Associated Press (AP) reported tonight.
Jokic's contract with Denver lasts for at least two more years, and the Serbian center will have a salary of $55,2 million in the upcoming season, while his salary will be $2026 million in the 27/59 season.
The three-time NBA MVP also has a "player option" in his contract, which allows him to remain a member of the Nuggets through the 2027/28 season for a salary of $63 million.
Jokic, 30, became eligible to sign a contract extension with the Nuggets on Tuesday that would add three more years and about $212 million to his existing deal. By waiting until next summer, Jokic will be able to add four more years to his existing deal for even more money than he would be guaranteed if he decided to sign this summer.
Denver Nuggets president Josh Kroenke previously said that the club would present both options to Jokic and explain all the financial details regarding them.
"I'm not sure if he will agree or not, because we will also explain to him all the financial parameters regarding whether he should extend the contract now or later," Kronkie said.
Jokić finished second in the NBA MVP voting last season, after averaging 29,6 points, 12,7 rebounds and 10,2 assists in the regular season.
Denver reached the Western Conference semifinals in the playoffs, where they lost to Oklahoma City 3:4 on aggregate.
