After the European Basketball Championship, rumors emerged that Greece coach Vasilis Spanoulis could step down from his position, and that Giannis Antetokounmpo could follow in his footsteps.
The announcement caused an earthquake in Greece, but the president of the Federation, Vangelis Liolios, assures that Giannis will still play for the national team.
"I'm sure that Janis will continue. That's what I have to say and I say it responsibly. If he is healthy, it is certain that he will always be available for the national team. Janis has always been close to the national team, until he faced a serious injury. Every player, no matter how famous he is, will be recognized through success with the national team. Take Lionel Messi for example. A fantastic footballer, but what he did with the national team raised him to a higher level. Janis felt the same. Maybe he never said it formally, but, but he always fought for the team. The same is the case with the other players," Liolios said in an interview with ERT.
Liolios also briefly addressed the status of coach Spanoulis.
"Our wish is for Vasilis to continue as coach, but there are some problems that need to be resolved," said the president of the local federation.
