The Buducnost Bemax women's basketball team will host the Rilski team from Bulgaria tomorrow (18 p.m.) at the "Bemax Arena", officially opening the new season of the WABA League.
The team from Podgorica began preparations exactly two months ago, played eight friendly matches over the past month, and after being bye in the first round, now it's time for the official start.
"We have the first official match of the new season ahead of us. The first match will be against Rilski, who are newcomers to this competition. We know that this is a fairly young and talented team. We had the opportunity to see them in the duel against Celje, so we are ready to wait for the premiere," said Podgorica coach Petar Stojanović.
Rilski was defeated by Celje in the season opener, and Budućnost wants to start defending their crown the right way. During the break, the "wolves" had eight tests - they defeated Mega, Montana, Partizan, Kraljevo, then won the tournament in Banja Luka, where they defeated Kraljevo and Plamen from Croatian Požega, were convincing against Ragusa, only to lose to the Peć team after extra time.
"We had long preparations. We gathered on time, did a good job, played eight control matches, which really meant a lot to us and which we used in the right way, to see where we are at the moment. I am satisfied with the work done, the attitude of the girls, so we are ready for the start of the season and we are sincerely looking forward to these competitive matches," emphasized Stojanović.
Unlike last season, Buducnost Bemax was left by Americans Teri Briggs and Tess Amundsen, as well as Jelena Bulajić, who continued her education and basketball training in Florida, while Maja Bigović went to Hungary, where she joined the B team of Sopron.
On the other hand, the team was strengthened by Americans Delajin Bern, who plays at the power forward and center positions, and Gina Cunningham, who is the "five". After missing the entire season because they had to undergo anterior cruciate ligament surgery, Ksenija Šćepanović and Anastasija Drobnjak are returning to the team.
