Red Star Belgrade defeated Panathinaikos 86:68 (20:12, 26:20, 21:8, 19:28) tonight at home in Belgrade, in the ninth round of the Euroleague, thus recording their seventh consecutive triumph in that competition.
With this victory, the Belgrade "red and white" tied the club record for the number of consecutive triumphs in the Euroleague, which they previously set in the 2016/2017 season.
The most efficient players for the Red Star team in tonight's game with 14 points each were Chima Moneke, who also recorded eight rebounds, and Cody Miller-McIntyre, who also recorded nine rebounds and seven assists. Ognjen Dobrić added 10 points and five rebounds, while Jared Butler, Ebuka Izundu and Donatas Motiejunas scored eight points each.
Panathinaikos' most efficient player was Kostas Slukas with 16 points. Djedi Osman added 14 points, while Nikolaos Rogkavopoulos scored 12 points.
Red Star started the game better and, with points from Donatas Motiejunas and Chima Moneke, took a 6:2 lead after two and a half minutes of play.
A long period of scoreless play followed. The Greek team started the game with six consecutive missed three-pointers, and a goal by TJ Shorts ended a two-minute scoreless period. The game went into a television timeout midway through the first quarter after a goal by Red Star center Ebuka Izundu, with the "red and whites" leading 8:4.
The Red Star team found its attacking rhythm in the rest of the quarter and ended the first quarter with a 20:12 lead.
The "Red and Whites" took a double-digit lead (22:12) right at the start of the second quarter, and with great play on both sides of the court, they only increased their advantage, which after five minutes of play amounted to a 19-point difference of 36:17.
In the following period, with the help of their excellent defensive play, the Red Star team further increased their lead and managed to reach a 22-point advantage, 42:20, with three and a half minutes left in the second quarter.
The Greek team finally found its attacking rhythm in the final three minutes of the second quarter. After a poor start to the game in outside shooting, Panathinaikos players Dzedi Osman, Juanco Hernangomes and Kendrick Nunn managed to connect three consecutive three-pointers for their team and help them reduce the Red Star's lead to 46:32 after two quarters.
The "Red and Whites" started the third quarter better and after five minutes of play regained the lead by 20 points, 53:33.
The Red Star team continued in the same rhythm until the end of the quarter and ended the third quarter with a 27-point lead, 67:40.
Panathinaikos managed to mitigate the defeat in the final quarter, so Red Star recorded its seventh consecutive triumph in the Euroleague with an 86:68 victory in tonight's duel.
Red Star Belgrade is first in the standings with seven wins and two losses, while Panathinaikos is eighth with a score of 5/4.
Both clubs will play away in the next round, Red Star Belgrade against Dubai, and Panathinaikos against Paris.
