Anything seems possible this season when it comes to Cleveland - the Cavs were 0:2 in the Eastern Conference semifinals, and after tying the game, they found themselves facing another away defeat.
However, with two minutes left, when the scoreboard showed 103:94 for Detroit, they found additional strength for their first triumph away from home in the playoffs and a huge step towards the finals.
The Cavs defeated the Pistons 117-113 in overtime to take a 3-2 lead, and will have a match point for the Eastern Conference finals with New York in their "Rocket Arena."
Cleveland was led by James Harden with 30 points, eight rebounds and six assists, Donovan Mitchell with 21, Max Strus with 20 and Evan Mobley with 19 points scored.
In Cleveland, Cade Cunningham was the most efficient with 39 points, Dennis Jenkins scored 19, and Tobias Harris scored 13 points.
The Pistons led by 15 points in the first half and 103-94 with just over two minutes left in regulation. The Cavs came back into the game and tied the game at 103-103 after Mobley made a free throw with 45,2 seconds left.
"That period of the game speaks volumes about our progress - primarily in mental strength," said Kenny Atkinson, Cavs coach.
Cleveland then went on a 13-0 run and held Detroit scoreless for five minutes, from the end of the fourth quarter until midway through overtime. The Cavs took a seven-point lead in overtime, after which the home team failed to come back.
Game 6 of this series will be played on Friday night and will be hosted by Cleveland. The winner of this matchup in the Eastern Conference finals will face the New York Knicks, who eliminated Philadelphia 4-0.
