American basketball player Jackson Hayes became a citizen of Slovenia today and will play for that country's national team in the future.
The Basketball Association of Slovenia announced that Hayes received a Slovenian passport at the country's embassy in Washington, and that the Los Angeles Lakers center will not play for the Slovenian national team in the upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, which are scheduled for July.
Hayes (26) was the eighth pick in the 2019 American Professional Basketball League (NBA) draft, and has spent his entire career in the NBA.
After four seasons in New Orleans, he has been a member of the Lakers since 2023, for whom he averaged 7,5 points and 4,1 rebounds during the regular season of the previous season.
Hayes plays for the Lakers alongside Slovenian point guard Luka Dončić, who will now be his teammate on the Slovenian national team.
