The Minnesota Timberwolves basketball club will retire the number 21 jersey worn by Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, with a ceremony to be held in late February after the NBA League game with Boston, the Minneapolis club announced.
Garnett will become just the second player in the franchise's 37-year history to have his number retired, following the late Malik Seeley, Garnett's close friend and teammate, who died in a car accident in 2000.
Garnett was once on bad terms with former Timberwolves owner Glenn Taylor, but relations improved after the change in ownership structure.
Garnett was named a team ambassador last year. He made his first appearance at the Timberwolves' home, Target Center, in April during Minnesota's final regular-season game.
Garnett won the NBA Most Valuable Player award in the 2003–04 season, when he led the Timberwolves to the Western Conference Finals.
After spending the first 12 seasons of his career in Minnesota, he was traded to the Boston Celtics in 2007, with whom he won the NBA title in his first season.
He returned to Minnesota in 2015 and played his final, 21st season in the NBA.
Garnett is the Timberwolves' all-time leading scorer in numerous statistical categories, including points, rebounds, blocks, assists and steals.
His jersey retirement ceremony will be held on February 28th of next year, and the Celtics have already retired Garnett's jersey in 2022.
