The organizers of the Tour of Spain announced today that the results from the first stage, which is run on a team time trial, will not be counted in the overall ranking of the drivers, but only in the team ranking, after complaints from cyclists about safety.
The spokesman for the Tour of Spain, Ivan Gomes, said that after a meeting with the teams, the race directors, the International Cycling Union (UCI), decided that the results from tomorrow's first stage of the Vuelta will be counted only for the team ranking and not for the individual ranking, which means that all cyclists will the second stage, on Sunday, to start from scratch.
Gomes said that some cyclists complained that during the stage that starts in the coastal town of Puerto Banus and ends in Marbella, the course "does not have enough safety guarantees", as it is driven on a dirt road next to the sea.
