The owner of the Russian club Krasnodar, Sergey Galitsky, today accused the European Football Union (UEFA) of killing the sport in Eastern Europe.
"UEFA rules put a heavy burden on Eastern European clubs and stop them from becoming competitive at the European level," said Galicki, whose club was fined for breaching financial fair play.
Galitsky, a Russian billionaire and owner of a supermarket chain, pointed out that UEFA is stifling football in Eastern Europe with its restrictions in the form of financial fair play.
Krasnodar was punished because, according to UEFA rules, they spent more than their means. The Russian club, which was founded in 2008, is fighting for a place in the Champions League.
Five Russian clubs have been targeted by UEFA since last year for violating financial fair play, while a sixth is under investigation.
UEFA President Michel Platini has announced that certain financial fair play regulations should be abolished.
