Vice-president of Monaco Vadim Vasilyev said today that the club did not want to sell James Rodriguez to Real Madrid.

“Monaco is proud to have helped Rodriguez reveal his talent to the world. James is a fantastic player who has done great things with Monaco".

"The club had no intention of selling him. However, the time came when we considered that the transfer was the most useful solution for all parties", Vasiljev said, according to Spanish media.

The Colombian footballer and the top scorer of this year's World Cup signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid today, and was presented at the Santiago Bernabeu, where there were many people wearing Colombia jerseys.

"Monaco is proud to have been a part of one of the most important transfers in the history of football," Vasiliev added.

The amount of the transfer was not announced, but Spanish media reported that Real Monaco will pay 80 million euros for the Colombian.
