England remembers Gareth Southgate for the missed penalty in the semi-final of the European Championship in 1996 against Germany, at the old "Wembley", when the dream of the cradle of football to win the Euros ended in tears...
This fearless fighter and uncompromising central defender was treated with great injustice - due to his nine-year career in the England national team (from 1995 to 2004), Southgate did not deserve to be remembered for the unfortunate penalty.
The former defender of Aston Villa and Middlesbrough will be in the box of the stadium under Gorica tonight as a co-commentator of the ITV channel, together with the legendary Roy Keane and former Arsenal right-back Leigh Dixon.
"What do I expect? A good match and a nice atmosphere".
What about the English?
"I think that Montenegro has a chance to win, because the English national team is definitely not world class. Ok, it is a good team, with several top footballers, but the team is no longer world class".
What do you know about Montenegro?
"Enough, that they have two great strikers, Jovetic and Vucinic. However, they alone will not be enough to win. I repeat that Montenegro has a chance against England, but I don't think they will win, I hope they won't..."
Are you satisfied that little Montenegro is the biggest obstacle for the England national team to directly qualify for the European Championship?
"No, absolutely, why should I be tied? I got to know Montenegro in the last qualification cycle, when they played twice with England to a draw. For me, it was a surprise then, but now it is not".
How do you feel in Podgorica?
"Very pleasant, I'm sorry that I'm only here for two days. I hope there will be a pleasant atmosphere at the match as well," Southgate concluded in a flash interview for "Vijesti".
