Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini began his press conference after the victory over Chelsea by thanking outgoing Pope Benedict XVI for his eight years of service.
A few hours earlier, Benedict XVI gave his last Sunday blessing to the faithful gathered in St. Peter's Square in the Vatican.
He will resign on Thursday, becoming the first pope to do so in 600 years.
In the midst of last season, in which City won the English championship, Mancini visited the famous Catholic shrine in Medjugorje, in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
City trail Manchester United by 12 points with 11 rounds to go.
