The owner of the football club Rapid from Bucharest, George Kopos, filed for bankruptcy today due to large debts.
"I'm on my knees, I want to save Rapid," said Kopos.
Bankruptcy was filed in the court in Bucharest, and the debt amounts to 550.000 euros.
The three-time champions of Romania have not paid their players and staff for months. Kopos said today that the club has paid all taxes to the state.
Football regulations in Romania do not allow a bankrupt club to be allowed to compete in the first division, but Kopos has promised that the club will return to the top flight next season.
Rapid is currently ninth in the domestic league, which has 18 clubs.
