After three consecutive appearances at major competitions, Switzerland lost all chances to qualify for the European Championship in Poland and Ukraine.
The nation is disappointed, it expected much more, but Otmar Hitzfeld doesn't want to give up - he announced that he will continue to be the selector of "Sajji", regardless of the failure in the qualifications...
"I have a contract in which there is no termination clause in case of failure. Despite the fact that we did not succeed in these qualifications, the leaders of the federation gave me their support, they assured me that they have great confidence in my work," Hicfeld told German television station ZDF.
His thoughts now turn to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
"In the next few months, we will analyze the situation and start preparing in detail for the World Cup qualifiers in Brazil. That is now our primary goal," Hicfeld said.
The experienced German took over the national team in 2008 after the European Championship (Switzerland hosted together with Austria). He then replaced Kobi Kun, who was the selector for seven years...
