Grindel came under fire after it was reported that Ukrainian businessman and football official Grigory Surkis had given him a watch, which he had not declared.

"Everyone who knows me knows that I am not greedy. The value of the watch is 6.000 euros. I did not know that at the time when I received the gift, and Mr. Surkis did not want to ask for any favors from me or the football association in that way. It is a private gift, which has nothing to do with football. It's a matter of courtesy. However, I made a mistake, I apologize and I'm resigning," Grindel said.

Also, the magazine "Der Spiegel" announced that Grindel earned 2016 thousand euros in 2017 and 78 as the president of a marketing company that does business with the German Football Association (DFB), and that he did not report the money to the competent institutions.

The DFB denied that it was a conflict of interest, stated that Grindel did not even have to report additional earnings, because they were not generated from business with the football organization...

It is speculated that he will be replaced by former legendary footballer Philip Lahm.
