Liverpool County First Man Steve Rotherham has called for an independent investigation to determine how much the match between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid contributed to the spread of the coronavirus.
About 11 fans attended the second leg of the round of 52.000 of the Champions League on March XNUMX (three thousand traveled from Madrid).
The city council will work with Liverpool and John Moores Universities during this investigation.
In the announcement published by the City Council, it was stated that the investigation will be led by a public team that cares about health, together with partners from two city universities, but that there is no deadline by which all the work should be completed.
The Mayor of Liverpool, Joe Anderson, said that he had authorized an investigation and that he wanted the Council to establish whether there was any indication that the holding of the match had affected the state of the city and the surrounding area. In Liverpool, more than 270 people died as a result of the coronavirus, and more than 1.250 tested positive.
The mayor of Madrid has previously stated that it was a mistake to allow the match to be played.
