England soccer player Danny Rose said today that he advised his family not to go to Russia for the World Cup, as he was afraid they might experience racial insults.
"I don't want to worry about the safety of my family while I'm preparing for games. If something happened to me, it wouldn't affect me the way it would if someone abused my family. I told them I don't want them to travel to Russia because of racism and anything else that could happen," Rose told London's Evening Standard.
He said his father is extremely upset, as he will not be watching Rose's first World Cup.
"I heard it in his voice. He said that maybe he won't have the opportunity to come and watch me at the World Cup again. It's sad, but that's how things are now. Russia somehow won the organization of the World Cup and we have to accept that," he added. is a dark-skinned Tottenham football player.
Russia has promised to eradicate racism at the tournament, which it will host from June 14 to July 15, but there were problems during a friendly with France in March in St. Petersburg.
The International Football Federation (FIFA) fined Russia 30.000 Swiss francs, and Rose said the fine was not nearly enough to have the desired effect on Russia.
"That punishment is disgusting and ridiculous. What does Fifa expect? If I'm racially abused there, nothing will change," Rose added.
Rose was in the spotlight in October 2012, when he played for England's youth team against Serbia in Kruševac, in the qualifiers for the 2013 European Championship.
He said that he was racially abused by the home fans and that they threw stones at him. After England's winning goal (1:0), he kicked the ball into the audience, after which he received a red card, and there was a commotion on the field.
The Football Association of Serbia was then fined 80.000 euros and one game of the youth national team without an audience, and individual penalties were imposed on individual players and members of both professional staffs.
