At least eight football players have been infected with the coronavirus, it was announced from four Portuguese first league clubs, among them the current champion Benfica.
Portuguese clubs are preparing for the resumption of the championship at the end of May, and Benfica announced on Sunday that its midfielder David Tavares had tested positive on Friday. The player has no symptoms and is in quarantine, the Lisbon cube added in its announcement.
A day earlier, Vitoria Guimarães confirmed that it has three infected in its ranks, and Moreirense reported one case of infection. As reported by the Lusa news agency, three players and two members of Famalikao's coaching staff are also infected.
The Portuguese government announced on April 30 that the first league championship could resume on the last weekend in May, in front of empty stands.
When the Portuguese championship was suspended on March 12 due to the coronavirus pandemic, Porto was first in the table with a point advantage over second-placed Benfica.
The Portuguese League and the Portuguese Football Federation, which have not yet announced the exact date for the resumption of the championship, on Sunday revealed the conditions of the General Directorate of Health (DGS) under which the last ten rounds of the championship can be played.
Football players will have to limit social contacts with their relatives and club staff. When the championship resumes, player testing will be conducted twice a week.
The matches will be played in a limited number of stadiums and a maximum of ten people can participate in their organization.
