Cologne captain Jonas Hektor has extended his contract with the club until 2023, despite interest from Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.
Hektor extended his contract for two years, that is, he did not use the clause that allows him to leave the club at the end of the season, even though the team will almost certainly be relegated from the Bundesliga.
Three rounds before the end of the championship, Cologne is last in the table with eight points less than Mainz, which is out of the relegation zone.
"It wouldn't be a problem if I changed clubs at the end of the season, but that wouldn't be right. I belong to Cologne and I want to attack the new season with the team and the fans," said Hektor, who has been in Cologne since 2010.
The sporting director of the "Goats" Armin Fey said that Hector's decision is "a great sign for the team, the club and the fans".
