The president of the Basque Football Federation (EFF) Luis Mari Elustondo announced a sensation - the football team of that Spanish province could soon receive permission to play in international competitions.
"There is a preliminary agreement between the Basque and Spanish governments on this. I don't think it will be long before we are a separate national team," Elustondo told Marca.
In December 2018, the EFF asked FIFA for membership, but the initiative was blocked.
"Some problems that existed then have been solved," the EFF president said.
"We will continue to insist, and the Spanish and Basque authorities are ready for a final agreement".
Examples of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, as well as the Faroe Islands and Gibraltar, are in favor of the Basque Country.
The Basque national team has been playing friendly but unofficial matches for a long time. Three days ago, they beat Costa Rica in Eibar, with goals from Atlético Bilbao players Muniain and Unai Nunes.
The selector is Javier Clemente.
