Arsene Wenger, former coach of Arsenal and advisor to FIFA president Gianni Infantino for global football development, said that FIFA should consider holding the World Cup every two years instead of the current four.
Wenger determined that the four-year period between the two World Cups was unfair to the players.
"If you look at the World Cup teams, the average age is 27 or 28 years old. Because of that, because the World Cup is every four years, there is very little chance of winning it again because then you would be in your later years. That's why maybe we should organize The World Cup every two years," he said in an interview with BeIn Sport.
Wenger has been critical of the UEFA Nations League in the past, he is a supporter of the idea that the World and European Championships are the most important.
"Eliminate everything else. Organize only important competitions and remove all parallel competitions from the game. People must understand what it is about and get only games with meaning," said the Frenchman, who also emphasized that the qualification system should be changed.
"I would say that it is logical to shorten the qualifications, because instead of the dates in October, November, March, June... we would play all the qualifications with more games in October and February. Players and clubs would be happier," Wenger said.
Wenger admitted that his idea of the season lasting from March to November met with little support, and he believes that the summer break is completely unnecessary and outdated.
