Football club Schalke today condemned the action of the fans, who threw eggs at the players of the team from Gelsenkirchen for several hours after they were relegated from the Bundesliga.
"Individual fans crossed a line that we believe should not be crossed," Schalke said in a statement.
The fans clashed with the players on the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, when the team returned from Bielefeld, where they lost 1:0 against Arminia.
Thus, for the first time in 30 years, Schalke was relegated from the highest level of competitive German football.
Football club Schalke stated that it understands the anger, but that the club will never accept that the safety of players and staff is endangered.
"That is exactly what happened in the case of individuals," it added.
The police announced that around 600 fans had gathered in front of the stadium, where they were waiting for the team to return.
When the team got off the bus, the players were reportedly pelted with eggs and verbally assaulted.
The police stated that they intervened to prevent the incident from escalating. There were no arrests, no injuries, and the case is under investigation.
