The young football team of Montenegro defeated the Republic of Ireland 2:1 in the qualifiers for the European Championship tonight in Podgorica.
Montenegro started furiously, already leading 2:0 after nine minutes, then Ireland reduced the score in the second half, played better, and then had a penalty to equalize - then goalkeeper Nikola Ivezić came on the scene and saved the Coventry penalty in the 2th minute. . Ivezić was also very lucky, because after defending, the ball fell out and hit the post.
Miodrag Vukotić's team opened the game brilliantly - already in the 4th minute, Milan Vukotić played past Nikola Krstović, and the "falcon" striker went around the Irish goalkeeper and shook the net.
Five minutes later, the scoreboard read 2:0 - Danilo Pešukić passed the ball to Krstović, who at the right moment played past Ivan Vukčević.
Montenegro could have scored another goal in the 1st half, Nikola Janjić had a good chance, but the result did not change.
Montenegro retreated in the 2nd half, waited for a chance on the counterattack, and in the end feared. Ireland was the better opponent in the second 45 minutes, and they crowned a better game in the 74th minute when the scorer was McGuinness.
The Irish tried until the end to equalize, they also had that penalty, but in the end Montenegro won and ended the series of three defeats in the qualifiers.
By the end of the match, Zaim Divanović also shook the net, but the goal was disallowed due to offside. It seems that the referee made a mistake in this situation, and that the situation was legal.
After today's victory, Montenegro has seven points, the same as Ireland, but two matches more. In the other matches of group F, Italy and Sweden drew (1:1), while Bosnia and Herzegovina defeated Luxembourg 2:0 away.
