Before the start of the season, Southampton were without striker Danny Ings, who surprisingly left the club for Aston Villa. Being without one of the best players forced the leaders of the "saints" to activate the market and bring in an adequate replacement, a center forward, who would guarantee with his goals that the team would not get into a situation where they have to fight for survival.
The choice fell on Adam Armstrong, who came from Blackburn for 18 million euros. The plan of the manager Ralf Hasenhittle was for the English footballer, together with Che Adams, who has been with the club before, to be the backbone of the attack, while the young Albanian Armando Broja came from Chelsea on loan with the right to buy, who was supposed to be their replacement and a half the need comes into play.
As the season progressed, it became apparent that Armstrong could not live up to the expectations of the manager and board. He scored two goals in 17 games, while Adams had a slightly better performance, even though he was out for a while due to the coronavirus - four goals in 14 games.
Broja took advantage of the fact that the main attackers were out of shape - after playing a total of 83 minutes in the first eight games, he slowly started to improve his form, is establishing himself and is currently one of Southampton's best players. Along with James Ward-Prowse, he is the team's most effective player this season with five goals, and he scored the last one on Tuesday, in the victory (4:1) against Brentford in the postponed match of the 18th round of the Premier League. At 20 years and 123 days, he became the youngest player to score five goals in the Premier League this season.
As of Tuesday, the Albanian representative is the owner of another record. He is the youngest footballer in the elite English competition who scored a goal in the first four home games, in which he was a starter. And the last player who scored at least one goal in four consecutive matches, in which he started on the home field, was former Chelsea footballer Diego Costa in 2014.
"He likes it here. He wants to be with us, the fans love him. It would be great if he was our player," Hazenhitl said.
Armando Broja was born on September 10, 2001, just one day before terrorists brought down New York's Twin Towers in the famous attack. He was born in the town of Slough, in Berkshire, the wider area of London, but he comes from the vicinity of Shkodra - the town of Maljesi e Made, on the Albanian side of Lake Shkodra, where his parents are from, who moved to England shortly before Armando's birth.
Young Armando clearly had no dilemma, he has been wearing the jersey of the Albanian national team since his youth, and in the senior team he has played 10 matches and has already scored three goals.
They are aware in Southampton that it will be difficult to keep Broja next season. If he continues with these kinds of games, Chelsea will withdraw him from the loan, but, the media write, there is little chance that the Albanian will stay in London and fight for playing time in competition with Lukaku, Havertz, Werner...
