The German Football Association (DFB) on Friday revoked the honorary membership of former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder over his ties to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"The Russian attack on Ukraine is contrary to international law and therefore incompatible with our values," said DFB president Rainer Koch.
"Unfortunately, Gerhard Schröder did not agree to numerous requests for clear positions against this war," added the head of the federation, which has already given Schröder an ultimatum to leave his positions or renounce his membership of the DFB.
On Wednesday, for the same reasons, Borussia Dortmund stripped the former chancellor of the title of honorary member of the club.
Schroeder (77) is close to Russian President Putin. He is the chairman of the board of directors of Rosneft, Russia's leading oil group, and the board of shareholders of Nord Stream 2, the controversial Russian-German gas pipeline, and is due to join the supervisory board of Russian giant Gazprom in June.
