The legendary Betis footballer Joaquin announced last year that this would be the last season of his career. The player, who will turn 41 in June, spent most of his career in the Andalusian team, has long been a legend of the club, and last night he rounded off that status with another cup.
In the final of the King's Cup, Betis defeated Valencia in the penalty shootout and won the third cup trophy, and the first after 17 years. And last night, like in 2005, when the "green and white" defeated Osasuna (2:1) in the final after extra time, there was a winger in the team. He is the only footballer in the history of the club who has won two trophies, since Betis cannot boast of often reaching the cup in any competition. The club won La Liga in 1935, the Cup for the first time in 1977, then again in 2005 and finally last night, for the third time. A gap of 17 years between the two trophies, and both times the active participant was Joaquin... Legend.
There is a well-known story when, after winning the Cup in 2005, Joaquin had an unusual "guest" at his wedding - it is, precisely, the trophy won in the most massive competition.
At 40 years and 276 days, last night he became the oldest footballer to play in the King's Cup. Also, he became the player with the longest time gap between two won cups - 6.160 days. He passed Pak Hent (5.915).
Last night, he entered the game in the 86th minute and scored a goal in the penalty shootout. After the match, he tearfully celebrated the trophy, and then put on a show for the fans and acted as a matador.
From 1999 to 2006, Joaquin played for Betis. Then he played for Valencia (won the Cup), Malaga and Fiorentina, and then in 2015 he returned to Andalusia. And there he will end his career.
Until the end of the season, he has one more goal - to try to win a place in the Champions League with Betis. The team has 57 points, four less than Athletic, which is in 4th position.
