Uruguay defender Jose Maria Jimenez, the Atletico defender, faces a 15-game suspension.
Footage has emerged showing him elbowing a FIFA competition director after Uruguay's 2-0 win over Ghana in the third round of Group H at the World Cup in Qatar.
Despite the win, Uruguay missed out on the round of XNUMX due to a worse goal difference than South Korea, and in stoppage time the South Americans felt they were denied a penalty over Edinson Cavani, which could have sent them into the knockout stages.
The Uruguayans went crazy and chased after referee Daniel Siebert, who they followed until he left the field.
In the melee, Jimenez elbowed a FIFA director, prompting Mundo Deportivo to write that the 27-year-old defender could face a 15-game ban, as the punch could be considered an attack on an official.
It is not clear whether the eventual 15-match ban would apply to Uruguay or club football.
Jimenez shouted at the cameras after the match:
"Thieves, these sons of bitches are a bunch of thieves... Just keep filming me..." said Jimenez, as his teammate Edinson Cavani toppled the VAR monitor upon exiting the dressing room.
