Several tens of thousands of people gathered last night in Mar del Plata, in the east of Argentina, to welcome Emiliano Martinez, the goalkeeper of the new soccer world champions.
About 100.000 people, according to local media, gathered on the beach, the place where the games were watched during the World Cup in Qatar in that coastal city, about 420 kilometers from Buenos Aires.
Martinez, named the best goalkeeper of the World Cup, said he was proud to be the first world champion from that city.
"Not only for me, but for all the kids, the little goalkeepers who dream of winning the fourth title," said the 30-year-old goalkeeper.
Argentina won their third World Cup title in Qatar, beating France on penalties, and Martinez said he did not hesitate to distract the penalty takers.
"During penalties I become strong and I know people respect me, I know that because the opposing players told me so," said Martinez.
He then, at the request of those present, caused a standing ovation with the dance he also performed at the World Cup after one of the missed shots by the French.
