Spanish football referees requested today that VAR be reinforced with semi-automatic offside technology after an error during the video intervention in the league match between Cadiz and Elce.
The referee's technical committee made the request to the Spanish league in a statement released today by the Spanish Football Federation. This move followed after the referee in the VAR room did not notice that the Elće player was clearly offside at the start of the action from which Elće reached the equalizer in the 81st minute.
A draw between Cadiz and Elće could be significant for both clubs in the fight for survival.
Cadiz coach Sergio Gonzalez said referee Carlos Del Cerro Grande spoke to him after the match and apologized for the mistake.
Cádiz president Manuel Vizcaino told Radio Marka today that the apology does not mean much to his club.
"It was hard to sleep last night. Now nothing can be done for my club, I just hope it doesn't happen to someone else," said Vischiano.
The semi-automatic offside technology was used by the Spanish federation in the Spanish Super Cup, which Barcelona won on Sunday with a victory in the final over Real Madrid.
It is expected that the Spanish league will also make an announcement during the day.
