The president of the Chinese Football Association, Chen Shuyuan, has been arrested on corruption charges.
The ruling Communist Party's anti-corruption body said only laconically that Chen Shuyuan had been placed under investigation by national and Hubei provincial sports bodies.
Communist Party authorities have not disclosed the details of the charges against him.
Chen is the president of the Chinese Football Association and vice chairman of its party committee, which illustrates the efforts of the authorities to influence the progress and success of Chinese football.
However, Chen did not have much success at the head of the Federation, and China won its only place in the World Championship in 2002.
Chinese President and Communist Party leader Xi Jinping has set the goal of making China a football superpower, but the huge amount of money invested in bringing in international stars has not yielded results.
