The Ukrainian champion Shakhtar Donetsk will play its "home" matches of the group stage of the Champions League at the "Volksparkstadion" in Hamburg, the club announced.
After the Russian invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022, Shakhtar will play their home games in the Champions League and Europa League in the 2022/2023 season. played in Warsaw, on the field of Legia.
"First, we would like to thank Warsaw and the Polish people for the support they have given us during the matches," said Dmytro Kirilenko, the commercial director of the Ukrainian club.
"We are sure that the matches in Hamburg will take place at the highest level, with local football fans, but also thousands of Ukrainians who currently live temporarily in Germany and other European countries," he added.
At Warsaw's 31.800-capacity stadium, Shakhtar's three Champions League group stage games against Real Madrid, Leipzig and Celtic attracted an average of more than 25.000.
The Ukrainian club also played two Europa League games against Rennes (playoffs) and Feyenoord (round of XNUMX).
The home of HSV, the famous German club currently in the Second Division, has a capacity of more than 50.000 seats. Last season HSV had an average of 53.500 spectators.
The stadium will host European Championship matches in the summer of 2024 (June 14 - July 14).
