The commemoration for the death of one of the best German football players of all time, Franz Beckenbauer, who died on January 7 at the age of 78, was held today at the Bayern stadium in Munich.
The outdoor commemoration in Beckenbauer's native Munich was attended by a large number of political officials and athletes, as well as thousands of Bayern fans.
"We are not only saying goodbye to a world-class footballer, we are saying goodbye to a great personality. He inspired us. His honesty, friendship and attitude were in line with his football skills. Thank you, France, thank you for everything," said the president Bayern Frank-Walter Steinmeier.
Beckenbauer's teammates with whom he won the World Cup in 1970 were among the individuals who laid flowers in tribute.
Flowers were also laid by Lotar Mateus, who as a player led Germany to the world championship title in 1990.
Back then, Beckenbauer was the coach of the "elves".
