Maybe this season he plays less, but when he is on the field, Stefan Savić is the leader of Atletico Madrid even at the age of 33 - he showed it once again last night on the field of the biggest rival and the biggest club on the planet, Real Madrid.
During November, something happened that was previously unimaginable - Diego Simeone increasingly sent the Montenegrin national team player to the bench for reserve players. There were rumors that this was the end of the love between Savić and the "colćoneros", and that his contract expires in June and that he will leave Madrid in January.
Of all that, however, there was nothing - Ćolo apparently decided to reduce the playing time of our ace, but to still seriously count on the guy who years ago became one of the symbols of Athletics.
If it wasn't like that, he probably wouldn't have sent him to the field against Real - 1:1.
"From the start, he was focused and confident, especially in aerial duels. He was close to scoring in the first half, and scored at the beginning of the second when the goal was disallowed due to an offside by Saul. In any case, he played a good game," wrote "Marka". after "Madrid" in which Atlético reached a point in the 93rd minute and rated Savić as seven, one of the higher ratings in both teams.
And the action in the goal that shocked Real started precisely from Savić, who found Memphis Depay with a long ball from the middle of the field, after which the Dutchman headed Marcos Llorente's goal.
"His throw-in led to a goal for 1:1. Rodrigo often attacked him, but Savić was firm in the duels. He didn't complicate things too much," is the assessment of another well-known Madrid newspaper, "Asa".
Spanish journalist close to Atlético Pasqual Ruiz Arnal believes that the Argentine specialist has again brought out the best from the Montenegrin.
"Even though earlier in the season he didn't show the best version of himself, Savić still has Simeone's full trust - more precisely, the Argentinian coach did everything for the Montenegrin footballer to return to the level of play that brought Atlético a lot years ago. Against Real, Savić was once again the stopper we used to be used to watching," Arnal wrote.
