Aston Villa was his first club on the Island - the giants and European champions from 1982 dedicated their first match at "Vila Park" in the new season to the memory of Matija Šarkic.
Before the big derby with Arsenal, the Birmingham club paid their respects to the Montenegrin goalkeeper, who died suddenly at the age of 27 at the beginning of the summer.
The minute of silence at the Aston Villa stadium was greeted with applause by the fans of both clubs, and in addition to Matia, it was addressed to the former player of this club, Jan Hamilton, as well as the former football player of the city rival of West Bromwich Albion, Craig Shakespeare.
During the first match of the new season, his last club Millwall said goodbye to Matija, while Wolverhampton - whose colors he defended from 2020 to 2023 - announced a minute's applause for our goalkeeper during tomorrow's match (Sunday, 15 p.m.) against Chelsea.
Matija Šarkić died on June 15 in Budva, just a few days after a memorable performance in the jersey of Montenegro against Belgium.
