The Football Association of England (FA) today accused Tottenham footballer Rodrigo Bentancur of racially insulting teammate Son Hyun Min.
In June, Bentancourt was a guest on Uruguayan television, and the host of the show asked him about the Tottenham shirt.
"Soni's? It could also be his cousin's jersey because they all look the same," Bentankur said at the time.
He later apologized and said his statement was a "very bad joke".
England's FA said the 27-year-old Uruguayan footballer was charged with an alleged breach of rules for misconduct in connection with a media interview and using abusive language.
"It constitutes a serious breach because it involved a reference, either express or implied, to nationality or race or ethnic origin," the statement said, the BBC reported.
According to FA rules, a ban of six to 12 matches will be recommended by the commissions for almost all types of discrimination.
Bentankur has until September 19 to respond to the charge.
Son said in June that Bentancourt apologized to him for the racial slur and that he knew he was wrong.
"Lolo would never intentionally say something offensive. We are brothers and nothing has changed," Son said at the time.
