The city of Marseille has offered to host the final of the Champions League in 2027, after the European Football Union (Uefa) decided to withdraw the organization from the San Siro stadium in Milan, due to planned works.
"And why shouldn't it be in Marseille, in the most beautiful stadium in France: the 'Velodrome'," wrote Sebastien Gibrael, a representative of the city authorities of Marseille, on Platform X, just a few hours after UEFA's decision.
According to him, the authorities of Marseille, together with the mayor Benoit Pajan, will support Marseille's bid to host the Champions League final in 2027.
Uefa announced on Tuesday evening that "San Siro" (the stadium where Milan and Inter Milan play), lost the organization of an important event because the city of Milan could not guarantee that the stadium and its surroundings would be ready for the match, due to renovation works.
The umbrella organization of European football also stated that it aims to choose the final venue by next June. The next two finals of the Champions League will be played in Munich and Budapest.
"San Siro", a stadium with a capacity of about 75.000 seats, has hosted the most important match of European club football four times (1965, 1970, 2001 and 2016).
