German Thomas Tuchel (51), former coach of Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), Chelsea and Bayern Munich, will be the coach of the England football team from January 1, 2025, the Football Association of England announced today.
His term will begin on January 1, 2025, together with the term of his deputy, Anthony Barry. The two will be in charge of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, which will be organized in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
"Fundamentally, we wanted to hire a coaching team that would give us the best possible chance of winning a major tournament, and we are confident they will achieve that," said Football Association chief executive Mark Ballingham.
British media reported last night that Tuchel has signed a contract and will earn between 4,5 and XNUMX million pounds a year, which is half the salary he had at Bayern Munich.
He has been out of work since leaving Bayern at the end of last season.
The Football Association of England has been looking for a coach since Gareth Southgate left his job in mid-July, after losing to Spain (2:1) in the final of the European Championship in Germany.
The team was temporarily led by Lee Carsley, the former selector of the young England national team.
Tuchel will thus become the third foreign coach in the history of the England national team, after Sven Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello. He won numerous trophies, including the Champions League with Chelsea, the Bundesliga with Bayern and two championship titles with PSG.
