Omonia, our own Stevan Jovetić and Novica Eraković, on Saturday (18 p.m.) welcomes a team of the same colors and a team also called Omonia, with May 29 next to its name.
A story similar to the one from Sofia with two CSKAs started in 2018 when a group of Omonia fans from the "Gate 9" group decided to found a new Omonia - initially it was called Omonia 1948, but later for legal reasons it was named Omonia May 29 .
It was May 29 that was crucial for the birth of the new Omonia.
On that date six years ago, after the financial problems that the club from Nicosia continuously had, it was decided that Omonia would pass from the ownership of the fans to the hands of the American-Cypriot businessman Stavros Papastavrou.
On the same day, part of the disgruntled fans decided to start a new club, which will reach the First League in just six seasons from amateurs and the fifth rank.
The Cypriot elite so far seems to be too much of a challenge for this young club, since after nine rounds they are winless, and with a total of two points they are holding a "lantern" at the bottom of the table.
However, how seriously they take this duel in the "old" Omonia is best shown by the fact that at the "GSP" stadium they are doing everything to ensure that Jovetic is ready for the "Derby of Nicosia".
The Montenegrin captain missed the game against Karmiotis on Monday due to a minor injury, but after that he trained with the team, so Valdas Dambrauskas will probably decide on the day of the game whether he will start with the new "eight" of Omonia.
On the other hand, Erakovic also skipped the last match in the championship, but a few days before that he played the entire game against Hearts in the Conference League.
Nicosia is preparing for a derby between two Omonia teams - one that is a giant of Cypriot football and the other that is just starting to write its own stories.
