Helmut Dukadam, the former goalkeeper of the football club Steau from Bucharest, died today at the age of 65.
"Romanian football suffered a heavy loss. Helmut Dukadam, one of the greatest goalkeepers in the great history of Steaua Bucharest and Romanian football, left us today and left a big wound in our souls. Steaua expresses its deepest regret and sends its sincere condolences to the family of the deceased. Dukadam won the European Champions Cup with Steaua in 1986, after saving all four penalties in the final against Barcelona in the penalty shootout.
In the same year, he was chosen as the best Romanian football player, and he finished eighth in the Ballon d'Or voting.
"The European football community mourns the loss of Helmut Dukadam," the European Football Union (Uefa) said in a statement on the X social network.
Dukadam played for Steaua from 1982 to 1986, and made two appearances for his country.
